The mailboxes are made of corten steel. This type of weathering steel forms a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather for several years.The steel forms a protective layer on the surface when exposed to weather (sun, rain etc); and this continues to regenerate while exposed - i.e. the steel is allowed to "rust" in order to form the protective coating.
Any marks or light surface scratches that the letterboxes may sustain will disappear over time due to this weathering rust effect.
